MIDDLE SCHOOL RECESS REDESIGN
How to keep middle schoolers occupied during their lunch break is a perennial problem. Some students like to run around and play sports, some prefer to chat with friends, some need a little bit of quiet time and a good book. The existing middle school playground was not conducive to any of these activities, being mostly just an empty, dusty space.
A group of parents were inspired to try to change this and after listening to the students and
consulting with the Board of Education and the school administration, as well as with the Old Croton Aquaduct, the Middle School Recess Redesign Committee worked tirelessly over many months to create an exciting new space for students to spend their lunch break.
Thanks to the participation of so many of our students and their families and friends, the Foundation 2015 Color Run was a huge success and we were able to contribute funding to this innovative project. Along with many private donors and local supporters, we were able to help the Middle School Recess Redesign Committee make this dream a reality.
In September 2015, the new recess area was open for students and improvements are made regularly. Middle schoolers are now able to play basketball, soccer, volleyball and gaga, sit on rocks or benches and relax in the new natural area, all in a safe, beautiful environment.
