KOKESHI DOLLS

Kokeshi (こけし kokeshi), are traditional Japanese dolls, originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of Kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs and the bottom is marked with the signature of the artist.
As part of school wide multi-cultural unit, the fourth grade learned about Kokeshi dolls, their cultural significance and how they are made. Students each fashioned a Kokeshi doll out of wood pieces and decorated them with a variety of mixed media. The dolls were then named by the students as they wrote a reflective piece describing their experience.
